Do high-carb diets lead to dementia and Alzheimers?
Evidently so, the Mayo Clinic, in a study released on Oct. 16, 2012, found a potential link between high carb diets and mild cognitive impairment. Subjects who were 70+ years old and ate a diet high in carbohydrates, were 400% more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment.
More importantly for Paleo eaters, the study also found that subjects who eat a diet with a higher proportion of protein and fat are less likely to become cognitively impaired.
“those whose diets were highest in fat — compared to the lowest — were 42 percent less likely to face cognitive impairment, and those who had the highest intake of protein had a reduced risk of 21 percent.”
Quite literally… Food For Thought.
Time to get Grandma on Paleo.
According to the clinic, “Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate stage between the expected cognitive decline of normal aging and the more serious decline of dementia…Mild cognitive impairment may increase your risk of later progressing to dementia, caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other neurological conditions.”
